construction hard hats Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy construction hard hats, right? No!

Be water-resistant

All hard hats also should have a label inside the shell listing the manufacturer, ANSI designation and class of the hat.

Class G – General Helmet: These hard hats provide protection against impact and object penetration. Their voltage protection is limited to 2,200 volts.

Class E – Electrical Helmet: Class E hard hats deliver the most protection against electrical hazards (up to 20,000 volts). Additionally, they protect against impact and penetration hazards from falling objects or objects flying through the air.

Class C – Conductive Helmet: For lightweight impact protection and more comfort, Class C hard hats are the way to go. However, OSHA points out that these offer no protection against electrical hazards.

Clean and inspect hard hats daily. Hard hats with cracks, perforations or other deformities should be removed from service immediately.

Know that paints, paint thinners and certain types of cleaning agents can weaken a hard hat’s shell, as well as reduce its electrical resistance.Consult the hard hat’s manufacturer if you are unsure what products you can use.

Do not apply labels or insert holes into a hard hat – doing so can damage the its protective capabilities.

But the Husqvarna pro-forest chain saw helmet system is an outstanding product acquiring itself a position in the list of an almost comfortable hard hat.

What Are Phenolic Hard Hats

Unlike plastic hard hats, phenolic hard hats are coated with a material designed to prevent them from caving under abnormal and extreme conditions. They provide you with the maximum amount of protection that exceeds what a standard hard hat allows. One of its main features is that it has a sure fit that cradles your head. This is important because a hat that doesn’t fit properly automatically has compromised its integrity and lost some of its safety features. When that happens, it also loses its purpose. These hats are intended to protect your head against the elements plastic hats can’t and don’t protect against.

What Is Their Purpose

Phenolic hard hats can withstand temperatures reaching up to 350º F. The hard shell prevents the heat from penetrating through the hats and jeopardizing your health. Heat that high can cause a multitude of health issues. Electricity also cannot seep through these hats. Due to their nature and design, you will be able to survive, without injury, an electric charge measuring 2,200 volts. This does not mean that you can escape any situation. You just won’t experience a direct contact with the electricity or the heat that you are exposed to. Falling debris kills and injures many people each year, even those who are wearing a hard hat. Phenolic hard hats also guard against the impact of debris. In addition, they protect your head from chemicals, asbestos, and other material that would come into direct contact with the top of your head.

What Occupations Use These Hard Hats

Since the top of your head is exposed to more danger than the rest of your body, and it’s the most sensitive and susceptible to injury, a hard hat is often a regulated safety requirement in many occupations. If you work in an environment that has safety hat regulations, one of the phenolic hard hats offered by your employer should be worn at all times. You’re likely to see coworkers wearing one if they handle harmful chemicals, are removing asbestos, are often in the nuclear section of your company, lift or place heavy equipment, or if you spend time in an area where debris often falls. A few of the other occupations that might require these hard hats are electricians, construction workers, welders, and those who work with explosive.

Useful dimming function and focusable optic

When in need to preserve your night vision, you will find this headlamp from the best hard hat lights to be really helpful as it features a highly useful dimming function. You can easily personalize runtime or output with it. Different tasks require different brightness levels hence the dimming function. It also features a focus ring for Fresnel lens and virtually unbreakable LED.

Wide application range

This hard hat light features three lighting mode thus allowing for a wide application range. What’s more, you can have it around your head or your hard hat, and your hands will be free to handle just any task. You can choose any of the three lighting modes to get the perfect light for the tasks at hand. Also, the different brightness levels help in regulating the batteries’ run time, so you will be unlikely to be left in darkness if you choose the right mode.

Ultra-bright headlamp and 90-degree tilt mechanism

Brightness is not an issue with this light because it features seven ultra-bright white LEDs for powerful illumination. This makes it highly applicable to various activities, even those requiring flood lighting. Also, no more neck strain when trying to focus the light to the needed spot thanks to the tilting mechanism.

Versatile hard hat light

This light features a total of four brightness setting modes. This means that you get to easily choose the amount of light that you need for various activities. Again, if you want the charge to last longer, mostly if you are not in a position to recharge it, you can select the mode with the least brightness. Also, different environments require different lightings, and the different modes give you the power to choose what you require.

Zoomable Light

Some activities do not require too much concentration of light and thus can be performed with just any lighting. However, some up close works require more light focus, and this is where the zooming in and out feature come to play. This headlamp enables you to have a bright spotlight that you can project on the specific object or sport thus making your work easier. Again, when you need to light an entire room, you can just zoom out to create a floodlight for that purpose. And, you do all this with a single adjustment.

Riding Hat Dos and Dont’s

Do replace your riding hat immediately if it suffers an extreme impact.

Do buy the best riding hat you can afford and never compromise safety.

Do throw away a hat that has sustained a significant level of impact is thrown away even if the damage isn’t visible.

Do report any accidents you and your hat are involved in to the British Horse Society as they maintain records of how hats perform.

Do replace your riding hat every years – because the padding compresses with wear and factors such as sunlight can break down its construction.

Materials of horse riding hats

Once upon a time horse riding hats were only made of velvet but nowadays different materials are widely available. Velvet, vinyl, leather-look, suede-look and plastic are all options as long as they include the correct safety rating. For competitions, check the requirements beforehand to ensure your hat meets the required criteria as you may be eliminated.

Choosing your riding hat

There are two genres of riding hats: single size and adjustable. Choosing between them depends on your discipline and riding ability.

Features of a riding hat

The chin strap is often overlooked despite being a key part of the hat. It needs to be easily adjustable so that it feels comfortable. The purpose of the chin strap is to ensure that the hat does not move and that it stays in the correct position on your head whilst you’re riding.  It should always be securely fastened under the chin and you should only be able to get one finger under it when it’s on. If you can get two fingers, side by side under the strap, the strap is not tight enough.  Adjust the chin strap before you adjust any of the other straps or dials if the hat has one.

The straps at the back and side of the hat come if several different designs but all serve the same purpose: to stop the hat from tipping forwards.  Fasten them equally.

Hats either have a 3- or a 4- point harness. The ‘3’ and the ‘4’ simply relate to the number of places it can be adjusted. Obviously a 4-point harness is more desirable as it means that you’ll be able to adjust fit in the maximum number of places for the best fit without compromising on safety.

Low Profile

Some of these liners are attached via Velcro while others are attached via tiny poppers.

Ventilated

Consider buying a ventilated hat if you have a ‘hot head’! From the safety angle, if you’re concerned about whether a vented hat will provide the same level of protection as a non-vented one…be assured that it will. Vented riding hats go through the same rigorous testing process and having vents does not reduce the level of protection. A good example is the Gatehouse RXCSkull Cap. It’s the most protective riding hat we sell. It has vents and yet still has the greatest level of safety certification, i.e. Snell E200and PAS: 015.

From the aesthetic angle, if you’re concerned about how the hat will look when you’ve got it on, the vents are incorporated in to the overall design of the hat giving a modern look which is incredibly popular.

Is it safe to put stickers on hard hats

We all like to feel like individuals, with our own tastes and personality coming through in the choice of music we listen to, books we read, films we watch and clothes we wear.

That’s why some people like to put stickers on their hard hat – either of brands that they like, favourite teams or other little personal symbols or signs. Stickers are also used to personalise hard hats and make them easier to identify. With so many hats, all looking exactly the same on site, they can easily get mixed up. And it’s always better for hygiene reasons to stick to one hat while at work. Similarly, companies often sense a branding opportunity and want to put the company’s logo on the hat.

On the face of it, these all seem like harmless reasons to put stickers on hats, and with few issues to consider. However, think about it a little closer and you start to realise that there could in fact be some serious issues around placing stickers, branding or name tags on hard hats.

Inspection

Firstly, hard hats need to undergo a regular inspection to ensure that they are in good working order and not damaged. A hat that is covered in stickers can be hard to assess and stickers can even cover areas of damage that could be a potential threat to the wearer. Even the smallest surface cracks can compromise the safety of the helmet and result in it being withdrawn from use. So anything that hides or disguise this damage could be dangerous.

Chemical reaction

Some sticky substances, including those used in harmless stickers can react with the plastic in the hard hat and reduce the effectiveness of the material. This is an unlikely scenario but not one that is impossible. Although most manufacturers say that their materials are resilient enough to withstand such a reaction, they do advise against the use of certain adhesives. Because it is impossible to test against all types of adhesives they usually recommend against using stickers.

Important information

It’s a little known fact that hard hats have use by dates. Because of the nature of the plastic in use, over time this can weaken and will need replacing. Every hard hat, by law, will have a date inscribed on it somewhere. This will let the safety inspector and user know when it’s time to replace it. If stickers are placed on the hat, they can cover up this date and the replacement can be overlooked. This again exposes the wearer to unnecessary risk.

So, as you can see, even though it might seem like a bit of harmless fun, an easy branding solution or convenient method of identification, stickers can be dangerous. It’s best to leave the hard hats as they are when wearing them on site.

Bern technically uses Hard Shell Construction to create their Hard Hats. Instead of using traditional EPS foam inside the helmet, Hard Hats use Bern’s Brock Foam inside their thicker ABS Shell. Brock Foam is and open cell foam designed for multi-impact protection. Protective head wear designed for multi-impact protection does not comply with the way the ASTM Certification Standards are written, and therefore can not be considered helmets.

There are two major certification systems for Snowboard Helmets; CE EN and ASTM.  All snowboard helmets sold in the United States must comply with ASTM standards.

ASTM is one of many American organizations dedicated to testing products to ensure that, in this case, the helmet can provide appropriate protection in simulated crashes. ASTM F2040 is the section regarding recreational snow sports helmets. Snowboard helmets which are awarded this certification status are intended to protect boarders against a single impact only. After one serious impact the snowboard helmet should be disposed of (thrown away) and replaced.

CE EN is a European based organization that helps to protect consumers my ensuring that products meet certain standards in order to be sold in the European market place. CN EN Certifications are often seen on snowboard helmets which are produced in Europe. Much like the American rating system snowboard helmets meeting CN EN certifications are designed to protect against a single impact only. After one serious impact the snowboard helmet should be disposed of and replaced.

Fixed Ventilation

Snowboard Helmets with fixed ventilation offer built in ventilation in order to help keep you cool and comfortable on the slopes. With fixed ventilation the manufacturers design the helmet to allow amount of air flow through the helmet, it can not be adjusted.

Audio Capabilities

Fewer and fewer riders are into making small talk on the chair lift and listening to the sound of their edges biting as they rip solid arcs down the face. Most snowboarders young and old are turning to audio helmets so they can ride with tunes and even take phone calls slope side. While a few of us still consider days on the slopes sacred and don’t want to be bothered on an epic pow day, many snowboard helmet manufacturers are making helmets with audio and Bluetooth capabilities and after market kits for those who didn’t upgrade from the start.

Single Link Audio Systems

Single Link Audio Systems are the most common audio systems on the market. The Single Link system allows you to plug your iPod or MPplayer directly into the speaker system in the ear flaps of the snowboard helmet. The cord that attaches to the helmet and your iPod or MPplayer may come with volume controls built into the cord.

Visors and Brims

Many snowboard helmets are offering visors and brims on some styles of snowboard helmets. While the extremely large visors can be helpful in protecting your face and snowboard goggle lenses while ripping through the trees, most of the time visors and brims are strictly style features.

How to measure

You want to use a flexible measuring tape or string if you can’t find a flexible measuring tape to measure all the way around your head. It is important to keep the measuring tape level as you measure around the back of your head keeping the measuring tape above your ears and roughly two fingers width above your eyebrows. This will ensure that you are measuring the largest part of your head.

If you need to use a string to measure, simply wrap the string around your head as described above. You can then use the length of string that it took to circle your head and measure it with a tape measure or ruler to determine how large your head is.

Feather and Black

There’s nothing more luxurious than real duck down to nestle your face into at the end of a tough day. This one is plump and bouncy despite its weighty 70 per cent down filling. Its high quality 100 per cent cotton exterior means it will stand the test of time, too – gone are the days of pulling feathers out of dog-eared pillow corners in the middle of the night.

Silent Night Studio Pillow

This could well be the cleverest pillow yet. It’s made of three layers of filling, each of slightly different heaviness and thickness, adding up to seven potential combinations. Remove one or more layers to find the right level of support to suit you. In reality it’s a genius option for a guest bedroom, where each visitor is likely to have a slightly different preference. The machine washable pillow is finished with a soft touch, anti-allergy cover designed to keep dust mites at bay.

Casper Pillow

You can’t go far wrong with Ikea’s bargain priced microfibre everyday options. They come rolled up and slowly fill out once unravelled to give a reliable pillow that is soft and – for those who like something to grab – large enough to manipulate. Its flat, wide design makes it ideal for back sleepers.

Hobart 77075Pro

This is ideal for professional welder. It has a large viewing area and offers shade settings between and 1The helmet is light-weight and comfortable on the head. The LCD technology allows you to move from light to dark and vice versa in a split second.

Pros: Light-weight, durable and easy to use. The wider viewing area allows for much better visibility and the variable shades allow a lot more flexibility when it comes to projects you can take on.

Antra AH6-260-0000

This mask offers high variability in terms of shade settings, from 4.5-and 9-1It has a large viewing lens and can be used for a wide range of projects.

Pros: It is light-weight. Most helmets do not offer the low range settings so this is a big advantage if you are doing a lot of different projects. You get replacement lenses as well with your order. This is the lowest priced option of all reviewed.

Cons: This is a very light weight option and people have complained about the nuts that hold it up – they are plastic and come loose quite easily.
