A scientific calculator is useful if you are in the science or math field for your occupation. It is a more advanced calculator that is able to perform exponential functions, trigonometry, calculus, and logarithms. Here are a few tips on what to look for when you purchase a scientific calculator.

Scientific Calculator Uses

When you are considering buying a scientific calculator, it is important to decide how you will be using it. Before scientific calculators, it was common to use a slide rule to figure out advanced math and engineering calculations.

Once the technology was created to make calculators, basic calculations were no longer performed by hand tools, and pencil and papers were replaced for doing more complex addition and multiplication tasks.

As calculator technology advanced, the type of mathematical functions it could do increased. They can now perform very advanced calculations including calculus and trigonometry, and many scientific calculators can do binary and octal calculations and include built-in numbers like pi.

Student Uses

Scientific calculators are often required for students from middle school on through college.

More advanced scientific calculators are often needed in high school for math, engineering, and advanced science classes, while college students will need a scientific calculator if they are studying math, engineering, chemistry, physics, astronomy or architecture.

It is important to match the level of the scientific calculator that you buy with the level of the class you are taking, so you don’t purchase a calculator that isn’t advanced enough or pay more for a calculator that has features you don’t need.

If you receive a recommendation from an instructor on the type of calculator to buy, it is always a good idea to follow their suggestion. This is especially important if you are buying a scientific calculator as a parent, so that your child isn’t struggling with the wrong type of calculator in class.

It is also not a bad idea to think about what math class your child will be taking the next year and get a calculator that will last your child for a few years in school.

Business Uses

You probably use a scientific calculator if you work in a math or science position. Engineers, architects, planners and designers also use a scientific calculator a lot in their work. At this level, it is vital to have a dependable scientific calculator that is able to perform basic and advanced functions in their chosen field.

Regular ‘Scientific’ Functions on your calculator

Without even tapping into their graphing capabilities yet, it is important to realize that graphing calculators offer a large advantage over regular scientific calculators. The nature of their display allows for a much more intuitive flow of work. Students are able to see each line that was completed, and can actually copy and paste values of calculations from previous lines of work. This becomes extremely valuable in many applications of difficult math problems, not to mention physics, math, engineering, statistics and even some branches of biology. When problems require multiple steps and a variety of numbers that are very large, very small and/or contain many decimal values, storing answers becomes an essential skill.

Graphing Capabilities

The reality is that students first need a solid understanding in the paper-and-pencil art of graphing before taking the plunge into a graphing calculator. Through the use of algebra equations, tables of values of ordered coordinate pairs, and plotting on the Cartesian coordinate plane, students develop a deeper understanding of what it actually means to plot the graph of a function.

Graphing makes word problems make sense

Most application problems (you know, those dreaded word problems about trains, planes, projectiles, maximizing revenue, finding the normal force or coefficient of friction) in algebra classes can be more easily solved and understood when graphed. Graphing the equations you are trying to solve gives you a visual representation of the functions, and allows you to see what exactly it is you’re solving for. The majority of us are primarily visual learners, and a graphing calculator greatly adds to the learning process.

What to look for in a graphing calculator

It has to work for you. There are varying levels of power, sophistication and capabilities in graphing calculators, and it’s important to choose the one that’s right for you. For the high school student who just got comfortable using a regular scientific calculator last year, it is best to start with a more basic model, such as a TI-8or TI-8Both are quite user-friendly, with large easy-to-read buttons and excellent display of numbers, functions, and parentheses (or brackets).

Packed To The Brim With Features

The HP G8X92AA is hands down, the most feature rich statistic calculator that we have seen in recent times. There’s no end to what you can do with it. But just to give you an idea, it features graphing functions like scatter plot, 2-D, parametric and more, Scientific functions like unit conversions, Boolean graphics and angle conversions, statistical functions like Σx, Σx2, Σy, Σy2, Σxy, linear regression and more.

The most desirable ones have a full multi colored LCD display. But even black and white displays work equally well provided that the numbers are sharp and crisp. You will be using the calculator in differently lit rooms. So, the display is of penultimate importance.

Apart from the type of calculations that you can perform, there are many other features that can make life simpler while you are using the best statistical calculator. The playback feature or a rewind feature as it is called in some models, allows you to go back and alter a formula or a calculation. Advanced graphing will be immensely helpful in both statistical as well as scientific calculations.

An internal storage memory allows you to store your calculations for future reference. USB connectivity will let you transfer the data from the calculator to a computer and vice a versa. Some advanced calculator models even support Wi-Fi these days allowing you to wirelessly transmit data. When it comes to features, the sky is the limit. But an often overlooked one is a sliding protective cover that keeps the keypad safe from wear and tear due to repeated use.

It goes without saying that you wouldn’t want to spend a huge amount to get a decent statistical calculator. And to that end, we have picked some amazing budget priced models for you. But as they say, you get what you pay for. The tradeoff is that lower priced models will rarely be as feature rich as the regular priced ones.

Note, both of these calculators are defaulted to the RPN system (Reverse Polar Notation… enter, +, equals 10). and it takes a bit to get used to. I like it better but it has a learning curve so if you’re short of time, do not go this route.

FE Exam Calculator Tips

Your first step will be to get one of these calculators well before you take the exam. When you are studying for the FE exam, whether it’s working example problems or taking a practice exam, you should always practice with the same calculator your plan to use on the exam. Knowing the layout of the buttons can save you time and errors in entering formulas. While some problems may be of the “plug and chug” variety, you still have to plug in all those numbers. Even a minor typo can cost you precious time.

Investigate The Power Of Your Calculator

Your calculator is one of the most important tools you have available to you during the FE exam. Don’t forget that buying the right calculator, and using it when you study for the FE exam has the potential to help you do even better. Take the time to investigate what it can do, make sure you are using any new functions or commands correctly, and protect it from damage. Your calculator can either be your best friend of your most insidious enemy – the choice is yours.

The first step in battling interest is obvious: pay less of it. You can make this happen by refinancing your student loans.

When you refinance your student loans, you’re applying for a new loan for a better interest rate or better repayment terms. But going for the lowest interest rate is how you can pay your debt off faster.

One thing to be aware of is that refinancing federal loans converts them to private loans. That means you’ll no longer have access to things like federal forbearance, deferment, forgiveness, or income-driven repayment plans.

Regarding engineering student loan forgiveness, there aren’t as many options as there are for other professions, such as those in health care.

However, you may be eligible for student loan forgiveness for engineers if you work for a qualifying non-profit and have your loans forgiven through Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

Another option for student loan forgiveness for engineers is if you opt to teach instead of work as an engineer full-time to qualify for Teacher Loan Forgiveness.

If these forgiveness options don’t apply to you and you’ve secured employment at a company that looks like it will stand the test of time, then refinancing to private loans might not be a concern.

But if you’re founding a company or joining a startup, it might be more of a risk to give up the options that come with federal loans.

Here’s how you pay biweekly

The reason this subtle change to your payments makes a difference in your debt payoff is that there are enough weeks in the year that biweekly half payments lead to one full extra payment per year.

Bonus: if your employer pays you biweekly, you can automatically deduct your half payments from your paycheck.

As for making sure your payments are applied correctly, this step is crucial. Some student loan servicers will hold extra payments until the next due date rather than apply the extra to the principal balance.

You can make sure this isn’t happening to you by reviewing the way your payments are applied online or calling your servicer to make sure they’re being applied correctly.

Create your target payoff date

Once you’ve optimized your payments to make sure as much of your money is going to the balance as possible, the next step is to set a target payoff date.

Sure, you could skip this step and just pay off the loans along with the repayment plan. But doing so could cost you big.

Use your salary to beat the date and save on interest

Once you’ve picked a target payoff date, it’s time to do some calculations. You can use this Payment calculator to help.

Track your progress

Setting a goal usually works best if you track your progress. After all, you make what you measure.

The good news is technology is on your side here. There are tools and apps that can help you track your student loan debt payoff progress.

A fan of measurement myself, here’s a screenshot of my progress chart using the Student Loan Hero dashboard.

To be honest, I’m not thrilled with my numbers here. Considering the fact that I’ve been paying these loans for more than ten years, I wish I was a lot further along. But I never bothered trying to pay my loans down faster than my original date. So, this is what I get for that.

Now, look what would happen if I were to switch gears and decide I want to pay the remainder of my debt in five years.

Prepare for life after student loan debt

Staying motivated is one of the hardest things about student loan debt repayment – especially if you’re trying to get out of debt faster.

That’s why you should start thinking about what that life looks like now. Is it buying a house? Developing a career as a digital nomad? Maybe it’s going into a startup accelerator and building your own business.

Whatever it is you’re dreaming of, get ready for it now, so you don’t lose sight of your ultimate goal.

Put your income to good use with a spending plan

No matter how good your pay, if you don’t have a spending plan, you’re probably wasting money. Remember you make what you measure? That works for money management too.

Think of it this way. A spending plan can help you maximize your earnings by giving every dollar a job. Rather than spending freely, you can decide how much of your money you want to go to savings, entertainment, technology, and so on.

And if you start budgeting now, you’ll be way ahead of the game compared to most. According to a U.S. Bank study, only 4percent of Americans follow a budget. That same study showed that 5percent are concerned with their finances.

Imagine how many future money challenges you could avoid if you take the time to learn to budget now.
