Why did this lipo battery charger come in second place?

Seems that the material is good. It has a very beautiful color but I don’t really like the texture. I really liked it. It is amazing in every aspect. Holy Stone 5-in-USB Charger

This is a very cheap battery pack charger from Holy Stone that will charge five packs at the same time. It needs power from USB, which can be from a power bank, computer, or wall charger. The best results will come from a wall charger with enough amps to charge all five batteries at the full 500 mAh rate.

It’s dirt cheap, going for anything between ten and twenty five bucks. It has all the safety stuff you need and, combined with a LiPo safe and wall charger, should keep you in the air for much longer.

People do complain that, although it works, it feels very cheap. It’s also pretty tricky to unplug the batteries without either long fingernails or a small pair of pliers. You don’t want to yank on the wires, that’s for sure.

Venom Pro 2

I’ve owned Venom charging products before and they’ve always been a pretty cost-effective way to get your various batteries charged. The interface is simple and this model, the Venom Pro 2, has a perfectly adequate amps on tap. For most multirotor fliers it’s unlikely that you’ll have batteries that come even close to needing that. You can charge a variety of battery types, but of course we mostly care about LiPos. The Venom can handle LiPo batteries with as many as six cells.

The most attractive thing about the Venom though, is its price. At about sixty bucks it’s half as expensive as similarly-specified chargers, and for someone starting out that only has basic charging needs it’s a good place to start.

It has the thermal safety alarm that you really want in a charger like this and will automatically shut off if it feels something is wrong while charging.

It has features that are generally considered high-end, such as internal resistance measurement and different battery profiles for discharging that you can save, and it comes with the most popular lead types. If you can’t spring for a more expensive model you could do a lot worse than the Venom.

There have been some reports of build-quality issues, though, so don’t do things like constantly plugging and unplugging the AC cord. It’s probably best to use it as a bench unit rather than a field unit.

C-Rate of a LiPo Battery

Without going into the physics of this, I try to explain this with an example. If a battery having the energy of 5000 mAh discharges at 1C (C-rate of 1), it will provide 5000 mA for one hour. If the same battery is operating at 2C, it will provide 10000 mA of current for 0.hr. Also, if this battery is operating at 0.5C, it would deliver 2500 mA of current for hours.  Some quadcopters have high amperage requirement, and the battery should be able to cope with this. The discharge rate is expressed as multiples of C, such as 2C and 3C, etc.

How to Calculate the Endurance of a Battery

One of the leading indicators of the health of a LiPo battery is its shape. The battery should feel stable and firm in hands. There are few things you must inspect every time before you install the battery.  These are the presence of any deformation, dent, any leakage, stain, any camber or burr on the sealing parts. These are the signs of the poor health of the battery and may adversely affect the performance. If these signs are present, the batteries are not fit for any commercial use and must be replaced.

Lithium Polymer Batteries are mostly charged to no more than 4.Volts and should not be depleted to less than 3.0 volts per cell. The battery chargers usually come with the battery but can be used interchangeably.

When it comes to battery charging, we all love to charge our batteries as soon as possible. However, for this purpose we might have to buy a special battery charger. These battery charger hubs can charge multiple batteries but varies in specs and can be broadly divided into two types.

Maintaining accurate documentation of Drone Batteries

Never charge your battery unattended – from time to time check to see if your battery is getting warm to the touch or starts to sewll, if so stop charging immediately and contact an expert immediately (like someone on dronetrest) before using the battery again.

Always charge your battery at 1C or less – many chargers allow you to set a charging rate, although most batteries can support up to 5C charge rates (which makes charging your battery much faster). Its always best to charge at 1C or less as this means the chemicals inside your battery will gain energy slower which keeps them more stable and ultimately means your battery will have a much longer life in terms of charge/discharge cycles.

Ensure the number of cells and battery type are set correctly on your charger to match the cell count in your battery. – this is only applicable for more advanced chargers.

Some chargers like the one included with the DJI Phantom many not appear to be a balance charger, but that is because the phantom battery actually has a built in battery monitor and balancer built into it.

Charging current

Most batteries specificy a maximum charge rate as 1C, 2C etc… however most chargers you specifiy the charge rate in Amps, so sometimes there is confusion between these two values. To convert your battery C charge rate to Amps you simply need to multiply the battery capacity by the C rating. So lets say we have a 2200mAh battery with a charge rate of 2C. So the maximum current we can charge this battery at is 2.2Ah x = 4.4A. Similarly lets say we want to charge a 5100mAh battery at 1C, the max current we will need to set on our charger is 5.1Ah x = 5.1A. The maximum current you can for your charger depends on the power output it is cable of as described in the next section.

Power Output

All batteries have a certain power output level, defined in Watts, typically around 50W. This number represents how much power the charger can provide to your battery, ultimately the larger this is, the faster it can charge your battery. Watts are the product of current and voltage, so if you keep current constant (say at the recommended 1C value) you will use more power with higher voltage (bigger cell count) batteries. So having more power available it better. Lets look an example, if we want to charge a 3S 2200mAh battery at 1C we will need to use 12.6V x 2.2A = 27.72W. If we want to charge a 3S 5100mAh battery at 1C we will use 12.6V x 5.1A = 64.26W which is actually a little over the standard power rating for chargers. So we an only charge our 5100mAh battery at 50W/12.6V = 3.6A assuming we have a 50W charger.

Power Supply

Some batteries include a built in power supply so you dont need to worry about this. But if your battery does not include a power supply you will need to make sure that the one you buy will match your charger in terms of specifications and also the connector is the same. At Unmanned Tech we have the option to add a compatible power supply on most of our chargers.

However the most important thing is to ensure that the power supply has the correct power (Watts). So if using a 50W charger, you will need to make sure your power supply will be able to provide at least 50W of power to the charger, however getting something a little over is best such as a 60W power supply.

The process of charging a battery

Although each brand of charger might have different features, I will discuss the main ones that are shared with all Lipo chargers so you can have a basic idea of how to use them. For full details its best to read the documentation included with your charger. Some simple chargers just require you to connect them and it will start charging automatically.

Fast Charge

Some chargers have a fast charge feature which in my opinion is more of a gimmick than a useful feature. Fast charge allows you to save abit of time when charging your battery as it will skip the balancing step. In fast charge mode the charger will only look at the overall voltage of your battery and will stop slightly below the maximum charge for safety reasons (as the battery might not of been perfectly balanced at the start of the charge). This is only usefull if you want to get flying int he air, but in reality this does not save much time over a proper balance charge so to get the most life out of your batteries its best to always use the balance charge.

Battery Storage

Another useful feature that some chargers have is the Lipo storage mode. If you remember from your Lipo battery guide, its best to store your battery at about 40% to 50% charge. So the storage mode on your charger will automatically charge/discharge your lipo to this range in each cell so you can safely store your battery when you are not going to flying for a while.

Digital Multimeter

I’ve not yet heard of a LiPo that burst into flames during storage. All of the fire incidents that I’m aware of occurred during charge or discharge of the battery. Of those cases, the majority of problems happened during charge. Of those cases, the fault usually rested with either the charger or the person who was operating the charger…but not always.

The first lesson from all of this is to get a good quality charger and learn how to operate it properly. Many chargers on the market can charge LiPo and several other battery chemistries (which is very handy). These chargers often have built-in checks to make sure that they are configured properly. Those safeguards are helpful, but it is ultimately the burden of the user to make sure that things are kosher. Is the charger set for the correct number of cells? Is the charge rate within the battery’s limit? Is the balance plug connected? All of these are things that should be in your mental (if not written) charging checklist.

Most multi-cell LiPo batteries feature two power connectors. The primary connector provides the full series voltage of the battery to whatever device it is intended to run. You will also find a balance plug which enables you to tap into individual cells within the battery. The voltages of the cells in a battery pack may not stay in synch as they are cycled. The balance plug allows the charger to ensure that each cell within the pack is charged to the 4.volt maximum and no more. Most other battery chemistries don’t require this level of precision when charging. It matters with LiPos, so don’t overlook it.

Even when you’ve done everything properly, things can go wrong while charging. The best way to prepare for this circumstance is to fireproof your charging area. I have my charging bench topped with ceramic tiles. I also place my batteries in a fireproof container while they are being charged. Neither of these precautions will prevent a fire, but they will serve to mitigate the effects if a fire occurs.

To manage charging risk, I have a smoke detector just above my charging area.

Everything you read will warn that you should not leave a charging LiPo unattended. You want to be present to recognize any early signs of failure (puffing, smoking, venting) before things get out of hand. While I agree that this is sound advice, I am also enough of a realist to admit that it is impractical to keep a continuous watch (or even to always be in the same room) every time I charge. To manage this risk, I have a smoke detector just above my charging area. I also have a baby monitor set up. I never leave the house while charging, so I should hear the smoke detector regardless. The baby monitor lets me hear any warnings emitted by the charger or even strange sounds from the battery itself. My system is not as good as keeping a continuous watch over the battery, but I think it’s the next best thing.

Safe Discharging

Emptying the electrons from our LiPo batteries is the payback for tolerating their charging idiosyncrasies. This is where we get to plug in and enjoy the performance benefits of LiPo. Unfortunately, even here we must be mindful of some limitations to avoid problems in the near term, as well as down the road. We’ve already talked about verifying that your battery must be chosen to withstand the amp draw of the vehicle that it is powering. It is worth mentioning again since it is so crucial. Using a battery that can’t deliver the amps will result in lackluster performance and quite likely an early grave for the battery. Generally speaking, the less that batteries are pushed to their max (that goes for charge and discharge), the more cycles they will provide.

A PUFFY LIPO IS USUALLY OK TO USE AS LONG AS PERFORMANCE HAS NOT SIGNIFICANTLY DEGRADED. THIS OVERSTUFFED BATTERY IS READY FOR RETIREMENT.

Being kind to your LiPo batteries also requires that you prevent over-discharge. This means that you should not let the battery voltage drop below about 3.volts per cell. Most modern Electronic Speed Controls (ESC) will automatically warn you when your battery voltage is getting near the worry point. It may pulse the power to the motor, shut the motor off, or give you some other signature that it is time to wrap things up. Make sure that you are aware of how your ESC will notify you — and listen when it talks. You can also monitor the voltage of your battery with a small and inexpensive voltage checker, which will buzz a warning when you reach below a specified threshold.

To prevent over-discharge you should not let the battery voltage drop below about 3.volts per cell.

Over time, or perhaps from just one traumatic event, a LiPo battery may get “puffy”. Depending on how much it expands, it may or may not be ok to continue using it. A little swelling is usually ok as long as the battery will still physically fit in the vehicle. Once you notice a degradation in performance from a puffed battery, it’s time to retire it.

LiPo batteries intended for use on RC cars are usually encased in a hard plastic shell. This helps to protect the fragile cells from damage during the roughhousing that it will inevitably endure. Most other LiPos, however, have nothing more than a thin layer of heatshrink tubing encasing them. They are prone to accidental puncture with tools or knives. They are also quite likely to be damaged if they are involved in an aircraft crash. Be sure to thoroughly inspect any crashed battery for damage and keep an extra close eye on it for the next several charge cycles. Most RC racetracks and flying clubs keep buckets of sand handy to safely quarantine suspect batteries.

LIPO BATTERIES INTENDED FOR RC CARS ARE TYPICALLY ENCASED IN A HARD PLASTIC SHELL TO PROTECT THE CELLS FROM DAMAGE.

You may be able to mitigate crash damage to your battery by analyzing the physics of a potential crash. Perhaps the battery is located behind a bulkhead that has fasteners poking through it. If crash energy throws the battery forward, those protruding fasteners could very well puncture the battery and cause much greater damage overall. Do what you can to address the most likely scenarios.

LiPos have great self-discharge characteristics; they will hold their charge for a long time when they aren’t in use.

Crashes definitely take their toll on batteries, but I’ve seen at least as many LiPos that were ruined due to absent-minded mistakes. The most common error is leaving the battery plugged into the ESC. Even if you aren’t operating the vehicle, the ESC still pulls a small housekeeping current that will drain your battery completely if left unchecked.

LiPos have great self-discharge characteristics; meaning that they will hold their charge for a long time when they aren’t in use. For maximum longevity, it is advisable to set batteries to a storage state (about 3.8v per cell) if they are going to be unused for more than a few days.

When it comes to charging your LiPo battery is very important to never leave a LiPo to charge unsupervised, I have read a few too many stories of fires  starting because someone did not monitor their batteries while they where charging. Most of the time fires start because inferior b-grade LiPo batteries are used. If you use premium brand Lipo batteries such as Gens Ace you will not need to worry as they have all undergone rigorous safety tests and have the certifications to prove it. Here I will discuss a few rules you must follow while charging your batteries.

Before I get into the rules I also wanted to state that I am assuming you are using a LiPo battery charger. If you don’t know much about LiPo battery chargers check out our Lipo charger buying guide.

During the charge process the battery charger will constantly monitor the voltages of each cell and charge/discharge them to ensure they all the same. This is known as balance charging which all Lipo battery chargers do.

Ensure the batteries are stored at room temperature.

Do not directly connect the terminals with metal objects. This will short-circuit Batteries, resulting in heat and electrical discharge.

Never store loose Batteries together, the Batteries’ terminals may contact one another causing a short circuit.

Chargers 101

Regarding the Charge Power of 50 Watts per channel. Remember that Watts=Volts x Amps (Ohm’s Law). So a 3S Lipo has a nominal voltage of 11.1V, which equates out to 4.5A. Whereas a 6S pack=22.2V which results in a charge current of 2.2A.

This is not a problem, if like me, you charge your lipos at 1C and do not want a faster charge. I prefer to have several batteries available, rather than fast charging and I think my packs last a little longer.

Most common objections were

I believe we have covered the majority of these complaints and only the last two are real objections which is a large reason why we have selected this charger as the best for our use.

If you charge at more than 1C, please ensure your battery can take the high current. As I said before, I prefer never to charge at more than 1C and expect my batteries to last a little longer.

A good friend of mine has owned this charger for some time and is very happy with it. He sometimes decides to go flying and puts his batteries on charge then and in a very short time he is ready to go.

Amp Rating

Technically this is the maximum electrical current at which the battery can be discharged continuously before the battery will fail. This specification is set by the manufacturer, and is a standard measurement in the industry.

The “pulse or burst discharge rate” is not a standard measurement and varies from one manufacturer/vendor to another making comparisons from one company to another company impossible, and therefore should never be relied upon.

Look specifically for the continuous discharge rate (CDR) in the battery specifications. Burst or pulse ratings are just that, they can do a high amperage for less than second, but longer than that you begin to damage the cells. You want to choose batteries by their “continuous” rate, never for their burst. This is the danger of sub-ohming and not knowing the ins and outs of your batteries.

Any “max” or “pulse” rating is useless unless we know the length of the pulse, the time between the pulses, and the criteria used to set the rating (Voltage sag? Temperature? Run time? A combination of those?). Without knowing this, and all companies using the same pulse lengths, rest times, and criteria, we can’t use the max/pulse ratings for comparing any batteries. They are useless.

Our pick

If you’re looking for the easiest option for keeping your rechargeable batteries full, we recommend the Panasonic Advanced Individual NiMH Battery Charger, which comes with four Eneloop batteries. This simple device doesn’t require any setup and starts charging your batteries accurately as soon as you plug them in. It can charge a single battery (AA or AAA) if need be, unlike some comparable units, which require at least two batteries to work properly.

For most people, the repeated button presses needed to sort through these features will just make rechargeable batteries seem like a chore, but the work can help eke out slightly longer lives and marginally increased capacity if you’re willing to invest the time.

Smart chargers with room for more than four batteries are hard to find, but if you need the extra space, we recommend the Powerex MH-C800S, which can charge any combination of eight AAs and AAAs at a time. If you use a lot of batteries, the Powerex MH-C800S is worth paying extra for. But you should only get it if you really need all eight charging slots from one outlet, since it typically costs about twice as much as the Panasonic.

Unlike the Lacrosse BC-700, the MH-C800S only offers two charging speeds and displays a simple three-bar battery gauge instead of detailed charging information. Plus, it costs around twice the price as our simple pick from Panasonic. We also don’t like that the charger defaults to the faster 1-A charging mode, but a clearly labeled “Soft” button will slow that down to a 500-mA rate, which you should do every time to maximize the number of recharges your batteries can take.

We passed over the Powerex/Maha Energy MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger-Analyzer. It’s a feature-packed tinkerer’s dream, allowing you to select charge rates up to 2,000 mA at 100-mA increments, and it combines charge and discharge speeds for testing and conditioning—which is why we used it for our own testing for our upcoming rechargeable AA batteries guide. Its display is larger than the Lacrosse units, but it also requires longer button sequences to display info or set up charging profiles. So while it can do more, it also takes longer to do the things you’d normally want to do. Plenty of users swear by this charger, and even those that don’t will admit it’s extremely capable. For most people, though, the extra cost is going to net them extra frustration instead of extra practical features.

Lacrosse also makes a higher-end and lower-end charger in addition to the BC-700, but neither strike us as good a balance of value and usability. The smaller, less expensive BC-500 has a less intuitive one-button interface, doesn’t show as much information, and most importantly, doesn’t have selectable charging currents, instead sticking with 500 mA–the high end of what most experts recommend. Aside from included accessories, the biggest feature gained from moving up to the higher end BC-1000 is incredibly high speed charging. It allows for 1-A charging across all positions, as well as 1.5- and 1.8-A charging for two batteries—all settings we strongly recommend against using since doing so will significantly lower the number of recharges your battery can take.

The Maximal Power FC9Universal Rapid Charger is a large unit that will charge not only NiMH batteries, but also Nickel Cadmium (Ni-CD), Rechargeable Alkaline Manganese (RAM), and (the manufacturer claims) some non-rechargeable alkalines. (This last use is not generally recommended for safety reasons.) Even setting that aside, it offers some of the same control features as our Lacrosse BC-700 pick but with less information monitoring. The Lacrosse is the smaller, more reliable choice.

Like the Maximal unit, the Xtar VCcharges more than just NiMH batteries, also recharging Li-ion 18650 style batteries. These types of rechargeable Li-ion batteries are different from their disposable AA lithium replacements because they have higher voltages required by specific gear, most often camera equipment, and can destroy low voltage gear expecting AA power. The VChas a clear display, multi-stage charging, and selectable current levels. But it doesn’t offer the capacity discharge and recharge test of our Lacrosse pick, and even with a decently powerful USB power supply, some users report power bottlenecks.

Based on specifications, the Foxnovo F-4S is a competent multi-current charger but has a slower, single-button interface to cycle through all the modes. Many users complained about how loud the alert is every time the device finishes a function. No one wants to be woken up at a.m. because their batteries are ready.

Both the Poweradd 903A 4-bay High-Speed Intelligent Battery Charger and the EasyAcc 4-slot AA AAA Battery Charger (now discontinued) are inexpensive and seem as simple as our top pick. But the good user reviews are mostly courtesy of free samples, and we’re not as sure of charging technique and internal logic as we are our pick from Panasonic.
