mini bicycle pump Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy mini bicycle pump, right? No!

How we tested them

We haven’t given an exact pressure each will reach, as this could vary depending on factors like the length of stroke and how hard you work, so we’ve given a range instead.

Lezyne Road Drive Mini

Lezyne’s Road Drive comes in three sizes and we tested the largest – but even that’s only 28cm long and weighs in at 127g.

With a claimed maximum pressure of 160psi it had a lot to live up to – but our doubts proved groundless. The length and the 18cm stroke mean you get up to a very good pressure at double-quick speed. This reached around 80psi after 200 strokes, one of the highest figures of any pump we’ve tested.

The pumping action is very good too, with a Presta-only reversible hose: one end has Lezyne’s excellent screw-on chuck, the other Lezyne’s ‘Slip Fit’, for use if you’re in a hurry. Both work very well, each of them creating a solid connection.

The only negative – apart from the price – is that the barrel can get warm. The bracket, like the pump, is aluminium, but though metal it still only adds 12g.

What the makers say

The Outpost HV is the largest air-volume mini pump on the market and with its high/low pressure switch easily allows easy inflation up to 80 psi. Material construction is proven to work smoothly at temperatures as low as -40ºC.

Truflo Road CNC Flex

What the makers say The premium CNC machined and polished aluminium mini pump offers a telescoping double barrel for easier inflation. The high-pressure design efficiently pumps up to 120psi and features a pull-out flexi head with a clever adapter that fits both Presta and Schrader valves.

Spaero Sport ALU

What the makers say With the Lock Magnet closure, the Z-Turn flexible connection and aluminium construction, pumping your tyres with the Air Profil FC0will be a true pleasure.

Floor pumps

Schrader: The most common valve type, found on mountain bikes and hybrid bikes as well as cars. The value tends to be used on tyres that run at a lower pressure.

Presta: Most commonly found on road bikes, the presta valve is designed for higher pressure tyres that are more common on narrower tyre/wheel sizes.

Many of the floor pumps come with a pressure gauge for you to be able to see what the current pressure of your tyre is, this makes it much easier to determine how much more air you need to inflate.

Manual pumps

While floor pumps are fantastic around the home they are too bulky to carry around with you when you’re actually out on the bike, this is where manual pumps are perfectly suited. These lightweight pumps easily fit in to a bag, jersey pocket and can even be attached to your bike frame. Due to their compact size they will take longer to pump up a tyre to the recommended pressure than a floor pump. Most pumps take around 150-200 strokes to inflate a road bike tyre from flat.

One of the key considerations of a manual pump is the build quality, Lezyne pumps are made of aluminium construction and ooze quality and offer long term durability.

COpumps offer an alternative to the traditional manual pump for riders who want a portable pump that gets the job done quickly. By using mini canisters of COthese pumps are designed to inflate a tyre in a few seconds to a suitable riding pressure to get you home. They are perfect for use in a racing situation where every second is critical. Using a COinflator takes a couple of seconds rather than a couple of minutes and this could well be the difference between winning and losing.

Puncture Repair Kits

Before you start the repair you will need a set of tyre levers to help you get your tyre off in the first place. Tyre levers slide between your tyre and rim creating a space in which you can remove the tyre from the wheel. Most tyre levers are made from plastic and are designed to flex under load.

Why you need a good bike pump

If you own a bicycle, you need to own a bike pump. Properly inflated tires are critical to safely enjoying your ride through the neighborhood, down the mountain, or around the track. A fully pumped tire also rides considerably smoother and faster.

A flat tire can ruin a great day of riding, and the best way to avoid flat tires is to ensure they’re well inflated. Tires are more vulnerable to puncture when they are under inflated. The more you ride, the more pressure slowly escapes from your tires.

Even if you don’t ride often, the air in your tires will seep out while your bike waits for you in the garage. Temperature, riding surface, and the quality of your tube and tire will also impact how quickly you lose air pressure.

Owning a bike pump is the right move. The consensus in our research is that road bikes, which require the highest air pressure, should have tires pumped about once a week, hybrid bikes every two weeks, and mountain bike tires a bit less frequently than that.

A quality bike pump is an investment for many years of happy cycling. Bonus: Using the appropriate adapter, a bike pump can also inflate sports balls, children’s toys, pool floats, and air mattresses.

Speed and pressure

While inflating a tire is not necessarily a speed sport, if you can do it quicker and with less effort that’s a plus. For our floor pumps, we recorded the number of full pumps it took to achieve 80 PSI.

It becomes increasingly difficult to add air to a tube as the pressure builds when using a mini pump. Therefore, we compared the PSI levels at the moment that the resistance of the pressure halted our ability to continue pumping.

The kickback from the pressure is so great that forcing more air into the tire just becomes impossible. We also compared how many pumps were required to reach those points.

Runner up bike floor pump

The Nashbar Earl Grey Floor Pump stands out from the rest of the floor pump pack because of its extra-wide metal base that provides more stability than any other product in our tests. Not only is the base large and weighty, it is covered with a rubber pad that prevents slipping on smooth surfaces and protects the wood floors in your home.

Another distinguishing characteristic of the Nashbar is the oversized gauge, which sports a red needle against a black backdrop. The numbers are large and easy to read, and the contrasting colors help with seeing the PSI as you pump.

Runner up mini bike pump

The Pro Bike Tool Mini Bike Pump is cleverly designed in a compact package that offers individual valve connections for Schrader and Presta valves, a sliding pressure gauge, and a hose that detaches and fits inside the tube.

By removing the dust cap on one end of the pump, you reveal a six-inch hose with a screw-on valve connection on each side, one for Presta and one for Schrader. The middle of the hose contains a pressure gauge, which, as air is added to the tire, slowly starts to slide open rendering the PSI reading.

Find here.

A good bike pump is essential for a cyclist. Riding with correctly inflated tyres not only produces a faster ride with smoother handling but it also helps prevent punctures. As bike tyres can lose up to PSI per week a good bike pump is a worthy accessory to add to your arsenal. In this post I’ll take you through what to look for to make sure you don’t waste your money on the wrong one. I’ll also round up some of the best bike pumps that are well recommended.

Handheld bike pump

For on the go you’ll need a mini bike pump. These easily fit into bags, pockets or can even be strapped to the bike. Better mini pumps can reach high PSI levels although they’ll require closer to 180 pumps as opposed to around 20 for a floor pump.

Lezyne Road Drive

If you’re willing to spend a little more then the Lezyne Road Drive bike pump will get you to you’re required tyre pressure faster thanks to its unique design. It is also very lightweight at just 90g for the medium version. There is a carbon model for those who are truly weight conscious.

Prices: The carbon version will set you back a staggering £79.9where as the standard version is available for £29.69.

CObike pump

The big advantage of CObike pumps is the sheer speed in which they pump the tyre. On the downside if you run out of cartridges you cannot pump up your tyres. The Innovations Microflate Nano Pump is a good one to try.

Our pick

A stable triangular base, a reliable head on a long hose, and an easy-to-read gauge made this the no-objections tester favorite.

If our main pick is sold out, the Lezyne Classic Floor Drive is a reliable choice—it’s the new version of last year’s pick, the Steel Floor Drive. Once you’ve mastered the quickly learned skill of getting the pump head installed properly on the valve, the Classic Floor Drive is an uber-reliable pick that will never, ever release the valve until you want it to (here is a how-to video from Lezyne). With its all-metal construction, extra-large pressure gauge, and varnished wooden handle, the Classic Floor Drive is sure to please seasoned cyclists and aesthetes alike.

Budget pick

A stable rubber-coated base, readable gauge, and easily understood dual Presta-or-Schrader pump head make this an outstanding budget pick.

If you ride your bike only a couple of times a year, pick up the Nashbar Earl Grey, which costs about half as much as our main pick. The pump from the bike world’s mail-order giant uses a lot more plastic parts compared with the Turbo Charger HP, so it likely won’t last as long, but all agreed it was easy to use and felt pretty solid despite having what some testers described as a “cheap feel.” Even so, the Earl is as inexpensive as a reliable floor pump can be and will probably serve light-duty riders for years to come.

If a portable pump is what you’re after, check out our guide Best Bike Patch Kit for the most up-to-date information.

Pull Quote

Not a single user reported a failure to seal on the first try.

The Turbo Charger HP has a good head and reliably seals regardless of valve type or pressure. This is especially important, according to a former floor pump designer interviewed by my colleague Eric Hansen, because the head is often the only part that really differentiates one pump from another. Testers commended the long metal locking lever on the Turbo Charger HP’s head for being smooth and easy to lock onto both valve types. In fact, the Bontrager pump had a perfect record in our tests, with not a single user reporting a failure to seal on the first try. The only other pumps that did that successfully were the screw-on Lezyne models, but screwing them on takes longer than flipping a lever. The Bontrager’s head also felt sturdier than the flimsier, plastic levers found on cheaper pumps we looked at, including our budget pick Nashbar Earl Grey and the non-HP version of the Turbo Charger.

This is a minor difference, but testers appreciated that the head stowed at the top of the pump where it’s easy to reach without having to bend over. This gave it a slight ergonomic advantage over our runner-up and budget picks.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Despite the Turbo Charger HP’s overwhelming popularity with our testers, it did have a few downsides. One tester thought that the triangular base was a bit wobbly and could be improved with a little added heft to keep things grounded. On top of that, adding a bit of rubber to the bottom of the base would help keep things from slipping around in greasy or wet situations, although we had no problems with it during testing on a greasy bike shop floor.

The top-mounted pressure gauge was easy to read, but its location at the top of the pump shaft could make it susceptible to being broken if the pump falls over onto a hard surface, especially when compared with the protected designs located on the base like those found on the Nashbar Earl Grey and the Blackburn Airtower We did not test for this specific problem, but my personal experience in a bike shop has shown that the pump head or handle usually takes the brunt of this force. Also, the Turbo Charger HP is less likely to fall in the first place thanks to its large, three-footed base.

The Lezyne Classic Floor Drive is our runner-up pick for this round of testing. Its larger gauge gives it a leg up compared with the new version of last year’s top pick, the Lezyne Steel Floor Drive. We like it for its fool-proof screw-on pump head, 43-inch-long hose, and solid build quality, but the Turbo Charger HP has an overall more user-friendly design.

AerGun X-1000 Bike Floor Pump

The AerGun X-1000 Bike Floor Pump is a multi-purpose, high-pressure floor pump that is suitable for day to day use. The product is well-designed with convenient features such as a pressure release valve and a long air hose embedded into it.

This floor pump features a rigid construction with a metal barrel and a reinforced base for high stability. The pump head is conveniently designed to fit all types of valves including Presta and Schrader valves without the need for additional adapters. It also comes with ball and bladder needles included so that you can pump up soccer balls, basketballs, and pool toys with it. The gauge is easy-to-read and comes with an adjustable indicator so that you can control the exact amount of air in your bike tires. As with most floor pumps, the maximum pressure capacity for this bike floor pump is 160 PSI.

Vibrelli Bike Floor Pump

The Vibrelli Bike Floor Pump is a multi-purpose, affordable, and lightweight bicycle air pump that offers portability and quick inflation time as its perks. The airtight Rapid-T valve connection on the pump allows you to switch between a Presta and Schrader valve for supporting both road and mountain bikes.

The solid metal barrel and the sturdy base of the pump ensure maximum stability while pumping. The maximum pressure capacity for this floor pump is 160 PSI. The pressure gauge is very accurate and has large markings for good readability. Vibrelli also throws in ball inflation needles with the pump so that you can use it for pumping up footballs, basketballs, and other sports equipment whenever needed, as well.

Schwinn Floor Pump

The Schwinn Floor Pump is a simple, easy-to-use, no-nonsense floor pump that is best suited for individuals that are restricted to a limited budget (or need a backup pump). This product has a durable construction with a metal barrel and a sturdy and wide base for support.

The pump head is compatible with both Presta and Schrader valves though you might need to make a few adjustments with the locking lever. The extra-large gauge is accurate and easy to read off from – you can easily keep track of the amount of air that is filled in your bicycle tires. The maximum pressure capacity of the pump is 140 PSI which is a little disappointing for a floor pump.

Lezyne Micro Floor Drive Pump

The Lezyne Micro Floor Pump is a compact and ergonomic  pump that offers the portability of a mini pump with the comfort and power of a floor pump. It is compatible with Presta and Schrader valves which make it a suitable choice for both mountain and road bikes. The high-quality aluminum construction offers a lightweight experience without compromising on the durability.

The 24-inch hose makes it easy to reach the bicycle’s tire valve stems from a distance. There is a stainless-steel foot bed included in the pump, as well, which allows you to keep it stable and steady while pumping. As for dimensions, this top mini bike pump has a length of 300 mm, a weight of 150 grams, and a maximum pressure of 90 PSI.

Vibrelli Mini Bike Pump

The Vibrelli model is one of the best mini bike pumps that integrates an intelligent design with solid construction to provide a convenient on-the-go experience. There is an advanced extendable telescope included in the pump that allows you to easily switch between high volume and high pressure, depending on your requirements. The maximum pressure capacity of the pump is 120 PSI.

This mini bicycle pump also incorporates an intuitively designed valve that is compatible with Presta and Schrader valves. The mounting bracket and the Velcro straps make it easier to carry this mini pump since it can be directly attached to your bicycle (no need for an additional pump bag). The 218-mm length and the 270-gram weight further add to the portability of this pump.

SKS Spaero Double Action Mini Pump

One feature that sets the SKS Spaero Mini Pump apart from all the rest is its modern styling. We personally think that this is the best design for a mini bicycle pump in our review list. The pump sports a T-type handle which makes it easier to apply sufficient pumping force. It is also compatible with Presta and Schrader valves which means that it can be used with mountain and road bikes.

The ‘double action’ feature allows you to pump air not just by pushing but by pulling as well which we find to be very convenient, actually! There is also a flexible hose attached to this pump which ensures that the pressure remains steady throughout the pumping process. Moving on to dimensions, the pump has a length of 24mm, a weight of 15grams, and a maximum pressure capacity of 8PSI.

Pro Bike Tool Mini Bicycle Pump

The Pro Bike Tool Mini Bike Pump is a highly portable, and easy-to-use bicycle tire pump that features a lightweight and durable design. The pump head is compatible with Presta and Schrader valves without the need for additional adapters. A (clever) oversized piston allows you to pump more air per stroke which means that it requires less effort to inflate a tire with this pump. While it does not compete to the proficiency of a floor pump, it is capable of inflating a tire of almost any size in less than a minute.

The flexible air hose design allows the pump to work with awkward valve placements as well. A pressure gauge is also integrated into the pump which is surprising for a mini pump but adds to the overall convenience offered by the pump. The length of the pump is 22mm, the weight is just 12grams, and the maximum pressure capacity is 120 PSI (which is practically impossible to reach with a hand pump though).

Zefal HPX Frame-Fit Pump

The Zefal HPX Frame-Fit Pump is a simple yet effective frame pump that offers good pressure performance without comprising much on the portability. It has been designed to fit on the frames of most bicycles but it can also stand on its long barrel when needed. If you are tired of making use of the mini pumps that require a lot of effort then this might be the right choice for you since the longer barrel allows for a more efficient and smooth pumping experience. This product is only compatible with Presta valves though and requires you to have an adapter for the Schrader valve – keep in mind that this can reduce performance when used with a mountain bike. This frame pump sports a solid aluminum construction and can pump to an impressive maximum capacity of 17PSI. It comes in four different sizes that you can choose from, depending on your requirements.

Pro Bike Tool Mini Floor Bike Pump

Featuring a highly compact design and an extra-long barrel, the Pro Bike Tool Mini Floor Bike Pump is a frame pump that delivers an excellent pumping performance. The thread-on valve connection is compatible with Schrader and Presta valves which make the pump suitable for both mountain and road bikes. The T-shaped handle provides a firm grip and allows you to generate more pushing power for an easy pumping experience.

The oversized piston is a clever addition that allows you to push in more air with each stroke which ultimately equates to less effort being required for inflating a tire. There is a stainless steel foot peg integrated into the pump, as well, which allows for improved stability during pumping. As for the dimensions, this frame pump has a length of 3mm and a weight of 190 grams which makes it portable enough to carry around with you, whenever required. The maximum pressure capacity of the pump is 160 PSI.

Frame Pump

A frame pump is commonly regarded to be a longer and more efficient version of the mini pump. You can think of it as a mix between the floor pump and the mini pump. The design and weight of a frame pump allow it to fit on the frame of a bicycle for easy carriage. However, the since it is longer and often comes with its own standing supports, you can easily generate more power with them. This enables you to pump more pressure into your bicycle tires and even fill them to full capacity, when needed. However, it is still recommended that you make use of a frame pump as a secondary option to the floor pump due to the higher convenience and durability of floor pumps.

A COinflator is not strictly a bicycle air pump but instead a mini inflator. This inflator is an incredibly lightweight option that offers a quick and simple fix for a flat tire. These inflators make use of a small valve ending (or pump head) and inflate the tire using a COcanister (or cartridge). A COcartridge will give you sufficient gas for filling a complete tire. One advantage of making use of these pumps is that they are very lightweight and highly portable – most of them are so small that you can even carry them in your pockets. Another benefit is that these can provide instant inflation to the desired pressure which saves you from having to put in the effort of pumping air manually via a mini pump or frame pump. However, the downside is that these inflators can prove to be quite expensive in the long run (since you need a new cartridge each time) and these only offer a temporary fix to the problem. This is the reason that we have not reviewed COinflators in this article.

What To Look For In A Bicycle Tire Pump

There are two types of bicycle valves: Presta and Schrader. A Presta valve is a thin valve that has a removable inner core and is generally opened or closed through the use of tiny lock top. This valve is most commonly found in road bicycles and in the inner tubes of some mountain bicycles. On the other hand, a Schrader value is much broader and it does not involve as much mechanics as the Presta valve since it has to be sealed (for opening and closing) with a simple plastic top. This valve is commonly found on mountain bikes.

When you are looking for the right bicycle pump, it is important to know which valve do your bicycle tires have and then choose the pump that is compatible with the relevant valve. In most cases though, a bicycle tire pump will be compatible with both Presta and Schrader valves. Floor pumps most usually offer two separate points for each kind of valve while mini pumps or frame pumps will require you to adjust the pump head for ensuring a good fit.

The gauge is a small instrument that displays the PSI of the pump i.e. the pressure inside the tire. When you are pumping air into your bicycle tires, it is important to know exactly what pressure are you looking to fill them to for ensuring a smooth cycling experience and in some extreme cases, for preventing the tires from bursting. Therefore, to monitor the pressure inside the tire you will need a gauge on your pump. Most floor pumps come with a gauge but it is less commonly found in mini pumps and frame pumps (since they are designed for portability). Ideally, a bicycle pump should have a gauge that is accurate and has clear markings so that its reading can be easily understood.

Pressure and Volume

You will not always be requiring a pump that has the highest-pressure capacity – in fact, you will never see yourself finding the need for a pump that has a capacity above 160 PSI in most cases. The reason is that a higher-pressure pump is a direct trade-off with the volume output and the gauge accuracy.  A low-pressure pump means that you will be able to reach your desired pressure in fewer strokes while a high-pressure pump will require more strokes. Whether you need a high-pressure pump or a low-pressure pump is directly dependent on your bicycle tires. For instance, larger tires (such as those in mountain bikes) have a much greater volume than smaller tires and hence, you will need a low-pressure, large-volume pump for inflating them quickly and vice versa.

Design and Construction

The looks and more importantly, the style of the pump is also important – not just in terms of the aesthetics but in terms of usability and durability as well. A good bike pump should be able to last for several years without showing signs of wear and tear. The design and material that is used for the pumps are what define its durability. Pumps that have a plastic construction are the least expensive but will usually be the least durable (and can break easily) while pumps with a metal construction tend to be much more durable but are much more expensive. You need to find the right balance between size, durability, and price to pick the right bicycle pump for you.

Similarly, the best bike pump will have a handle that fits and feels perfect in your hands so that you can pump air easily and quickly. When you are buying a bicycle pump, it is important to keep in mind that a good bike pump will allow you to inflate the bicycle tires without tiring yourself out too quickly.

Size and Weight

If you are looking to purchase a floor pump that will be staying in your garage then the size and weight are not much of a concern and you should not bother with them. However, if you are looking for a mini pump or a frame pump that can help you inflate a tire in time of emergencies then you need to pick a pump that is lightweight and is small enough to be carried around easily. One key thing to remember here is that the smaller a pump, the lesser capacity it has. So, what you need to do is to look for a pump that is portable but has an adequate pumping capacity (according to your bike’s tires), as well.
