pool salt system Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy pool salt system, right? No!

D x D x Av Depth x 5.9

L x W x Av Depth x 6.0   Our best advice when buying an Intex saltwater system is to always choose a size capable of treating a bigger pool than the one you own.  This will reduce the amount of time the unit needs to be run per day and prolong system life.

Maintaining An Index Saltwater System

One of the most compelling reasons to convert to a saltwater system for your pool is the ease of maintaining a proper chlorine balance in your pool. Theoretically after it is set up correctly it should run on autopilot. This is true to a point.

Most systems have an indicator alert when chlorine levels are starting to run low and it is just a simple matter of adding a little more salt to increase the salt content Ito your pool. The normal values for correct pool hygiene are between 3000 and 3500 ppm (part per million).  At these concentrations the added salt cannot be noticed buy taste nor chlorine smell.

In our table above we show the recommended top up quantities when the Index saltwater system shows  a “Code 91” low salt alert.  These values are just guide lines, so add cautiously and check as the ppm readings rise.

That’s why a manual test is our preferred first option. Manual salt testing kits are cheap and easy to understand. They should be a part of any saltwater pool owners kit.

Pentair IntelliChlor

The IntelliChlor has easy, push button operation, and features a bright salt cell display, allowing you to check the salt levels and chlorine residual at a quick glance. It also displays water flow, water temperature and cell system status.

The IntelliChlor is made by Pentair, one of the most respected names in the pool industry. It comes with an automatic shut-off below 50 degrees to prevent overworking the salt cell during cold weather. The titanium cell is easily removed for cleaning or inspection.

The Intellichlor can be wired with 115v or 230v, which means you can plug into a grounded outlet, or hard wire it directly to a circuit breaker, or connect to an existing timeclock or controller system. Like most inground salt generators, grounding and bonding the power center is required.

Pool Pilot Digital Nano

The Pool Pilot Digital Nano by Autopilot comes easy to install and will be able to let you know how much salt should be added, if it is low. It has push button controls and an automatic salt cell cleaning function.

The tri-sensor will be able to measure the water temperature, flow and salt levels of the water, and the Nano will be able to maintain swimming pools up to 50,000 gallons.

The Nano also boasts a patented temperature compensation feature, Freeze protection and multi-language digital display.

It is recommended that an electrician hard wire the control box, which can be optionally configured to replace a mechanical time clock, and control the pool pump operation.

SolarChlor XT

Solar Chlor is safe to swim with, as it floats in the swimming pool. Additionally, it is self-cleaning! SolarChlor XT comes with a year warranty and is suitable for both inground and aboveground pools, up to 15000 gals (use or more for larger pools). Comes with a 3-year warranty.

Converting from chlorine to salt

Once you have made the decision that you want to convert from a traditional chlorine pool to a salt pool then your first decision will be which salt system to choose. A few considerations you will want to take into account when selecting your salt system are listed below.

Adding the salt

At start up it is best to shock your pool from an outside source like a standard granular pool shock. Then, wait until the chlorine level has returned to between to PPM before turning on the salt system. Now it’s time to kick on your salt system. We suggest setting the system to 50% chlorine production and let the system run for 2hours. After 2hours test your pool water with a good test strip to see if your free chlorine is between 1-PPM. If your chlorine is too high or too low, dial your chlorine product up or down in 10% increments and retest your chlorine in 2hours. Repeat this process until the proper chlorine level is reached. The nice thing is that once the salt system is dialed in it is pretty much a set-it-and-forget system, because it is always there producing natural chlorine for your pool at the desired amount to keep your pool crystal clear. Salt systems also have a superchlorinate feature which shocks your pool. So if you ever run into demanding water conditions then this feature comes in handy to shock your pool and get your pool water looking clear again.

Prolonging the life of your salt cell

Salt cells normally last 3-years. To get longer life out of your cell, you will want to follow certain steps.

As your salt cell is in use, calcium deposits will build up on the blades of your salt cell. To remove this calcium build up, soak your cell in diluted acid solution. To prolong the life of your cell, you will want to clean it at least once a season. On the flip side you want to make sure you do not clean your cell too often or with too highly concentrated acid solution as this can strip the cell of its titanium coating making it useless.

Calcium build-up

Salt pools tend to make the pH in your pool want to rise so it is important that you are monitoring your pH levels and adding muriatic acid to reduce the pH. High pH levels cause much quicker calcium build up on your salt cell as well as on your pool tiles. I learned this the hard way! If you want to get fancy, many pool owners are coupling their salt systems with an acid feed pump. This is nice as the production of chlorine in your pool is automatically produced by the salt chlorine generator and the pH levels are automated by the feed of acid from the acid pump.

Health Issues

The lower chlorine concentration of a saltwater pool will be gentler on a swimmer’s skin. This is a particular benefit to swimmers with allergies, but anyone will enjoy smoother skin when swimming in the pool. The lower level in a saltwater pool also reduces swimsuit fading. Chlorine in a traditional pool is higher in concentration and can cause the skin to itch, burn, and become dry.

Maintenance

tablets or sticks added regularly. Both pools will need the chlorine level checked on a regular basis to keep the chlorine level within the correct zone for having a clean, clear pool. The difference is that a saltwater pool’s chlorine is adjusted at the generator control box and by adding more salt to the water. By contrast, the chlorine system must be adjusted by the amount of chlorine physically added to the pool.

The chlorine pool will also need periodic “shocks” of more concentrated chlorine to ward off algae and maintain consistent chlorine levels. This involves dissolving chlorine in a bucket of water and adding it slowly to the pool. A saltwater pool needs this shock treatment less often, usually only after an especially heavy rain or when algae begin to bloom, making the pool turn green.

One difficulty with a saltwater pool is when a problem arises. The solution may be more complex than that of a traditional chlorine system and may require a pool professional to solve it. Homeowners can solve most chlorine pool issues using home testing kits and the right combination of chemicals.

An added maintenance necessity for the saltwater pool is checking the saltwater generator cells. They should be removed, inspected, and cleaned at least once a season.

Swimming Pool Features

One concern about saltwater systems is the effect the salt water has on the pool parts, such as the lighting, liner, and masonry work. This is especially true with a conversion of an existing chlorine system to a saltwater system because the original pool features may not have been designed to work well with salt water. For example, a concrete pool will likely need to be resurfaced sooner than if it remained a traditional chlorine pool. However, when installing a system in a new pool, the features can be chosen that will better withstand exposure to salt water. Fiberglass, as an example, is not affected by salt water and can be used as a saltwater pool surface.

Landscaping around the pool can be damaged by exposure to salt water. Due to the adverse effects on soil nutrients and plants, some communities ban these systems. Check local ordinances before installing a saltwater system. Traditional chlorine pools, however, do not have these issues with landscaping and soil.

Video transcription:

You will only need normal hand tools like a screwdriver and wrenches to get your pool filter system fixed and running. Measuring 1inches and only weighing 2pounds it’s easy to handle.

The filter system should be set no more than feet above the pool water level on a level base. Naturally it’s a good idea to site the pump and filter well away from any pool ladders.

As this is a filter unit only you will also need a water pump, if you don’t already have one this Hayward Power-Flo Matrix Above Ground Pump will do the job.

Despite popular belief, spa salt systems DO have chlorine. They actually create their own chlorine naturally, without binders or additives. This pure chlorine, is hailed as gentler on the skin and clothing. Because it’s generated organically, you don’t need to spend money on chlorine tablets or bromine. Keep in mind, you still need to balance and shock your hot tub with an oxidizer to keep water clean, so you will spend some money on chemicals.

Softer Water

Perhaps one of the best features of a salt water hot tub is the way the water feels — soft and smooth. The salt used is sodium chloride, the same salt as the ocean, but lesser quantities. This slightly salty water leaves your skin soft and refreshed.

What our customers have to say

They work through the process of electrolysis. First, water is passed over the chlorine generator. The salt (NaCl) molecules are separated and chlorine is produced. The chlorine is then instantly transformed into hypochlorous acid. This is the main cleaning agent in chlorine and what kills algae and bacteria. This, along with a combination of proper pool maintenance and proper pH levels, will keep your pool running smoothly.

The IMPORTANCE of a Zinc Anode

What does a zinc anode do? It is protects the metal components of your swimming pool from corrosion. The zinc anode will be the first thing to corrode, saving the other parts of your pool from corrosion. We are happy to quote a salt system if you might want to convert your pool to a salt/chlorine generating pool. If you have a salt pool already – double check to make sure you have a zinc anode. They are often overlooked, and are a critical part of your system.

If you are interested in a chlorine generating system, we are happy to quote the install for you. Our quote will depend on the size of your pool and existing equipment set up. We will quote an all inclusive package including the salt cell, power unit, installation, salt for in the pool, and the small but important zinc anode.

Watch Out For Twisted Cables

Twisted cables are the most frustrating aspect of owning an automated pool cleaner. In addition, tangles impair the cleaning function by not letting the device reach every nook and cranny of your pool. Read the reviews to make sure you buy a unit with an underwater cable swivel, to avoid this problem.

Cable Swivel

Robotic cleaners turn all the time and sometimes climb vertical walls. This can tangle the power cord unless a 360 degree swivel is in place.  With no swivel in place, a tangled power cable will frequently impair the cleaning ability and will become a mess to untangle.
