If you use fluorescents for the flowering stage, a canopy growing method like a screen of green should also be used. This helps maximize the fluorescent lighting and reduces the need for penetrating light.

Dual Arc Lamps

Dual arc lamps are another bulb type for HID lighting. While a dual arc lamp is technically a HPS lamp, dual arc lamps contain both bulb type components and emit a more natural, fuller light spectrum. For example, a 1000W dual arc lamp contains a 600W HPS component and 400W MH component.

Vegetative Stage

The vegetative stage of plant growth is time to have more intense light. Fluorescents are still commonly used, though with larger fixtures and more bulbs. LEDs are great for the vegetative stage too and even the older; low-technology LEDs do a decent job during this stage. Many growers have moved their older LEDs that aren’t well suited for the flowering stage to their vegetative room and experienced good results. HID Metal Halide grow lights have been the gold standard for the vegetative stage for the past few decades. They produce good results and can be used with larger plants that less intense lights like fluorescents. Ceramic Metal Halide is becoming popular and is praised for its performance during the vegetative stage of plant growth well.

Bloom Stage

HID lighting, specifically HPS grow lights, is the preferred bloom lighting for most grow rooms. Their lower initial cost and consistently good results make them ideal for most growers. High-end bulbs produce even better and the use of specialty bulbs, like finishing spectrum bulbs, can boost results even more by adding more of the frosty quality that wide/multi-spectrum lights like LEDs offer. Some growers are also using Ceramic Metal Halide for their bloom grows, though they perform better as vegetative stage lights than bloom.

There is no clear winner in our recommendation as there are many trade-offs and differences, with some being the preference of the grower and their style. T5s are our least favorite for this stage. But if they are used properly with a canopy scrog, they can provide good results. Due to the ease and affordability T5s can be a good option, just be sure to grow it right.

This experiment proves that. It also shows the ineffectiveness of using all-blue light for vegging. Sure, plants need more blue light during vegging than flowering, but they still need the other colors, too. The ideal vegging light has more blue light, but not only blue light.

The Experiment

This guy grew a head of lettuce (he used seedlings first, but discarded that experiment) under three different lights. One light was a Tfluorescent grow light, the other a 1watt all-blue LED (for vegging) and the third a 4watt red and blue LED.

In terms of cost, all option were fairly close when calculated on a cost per square inch basis, though the LEDs would cost less to run long-term. How about the results? See for yourself.

Here are some good Treplacement bulbs in case you experience burn out.  You can purchase either or foot bulbs.  They have a 27ooK rating and are 5watts each.  Their lifespan is up to 20,000 hours.

For growing greens

Go with a setup like this if you plan on growing leafy greens like lettuce, kale, spinach, and herbs indoors.

Lettuce farmers and those who grow other greens are a special case. Growing a plant to maturity indoors requires far more photons than sprouting a seedling. If you’re thinking of attempting indoor lettuce, kale, spinach, herbs, or other leafy things, you need stronger stuff than a T5, which simply won’t give you enough photons in a day. Go directly to a setup with two Fluence RAY22 lights, and don’t look back.  If you’re on a budget, and junglelike growth is not a priority, Hydrofarm’s Fluorescent Grow Light Fixture will get the job done. But because they only go up to a DLI of (or if you run them at least 2hours a day) your seedlings will be a bit anemic, and will grow up to about ½-inch high at most.

How we picked and tested

Flaws but not dealbreakers

As mentioned earlier, the Hydrofarm Commercial Twill not bring your tabletop greens to their full potential. If you keep this light on 2hours a day, you’ll still only get a DLI of 9—considerably below the DLI of 1that greenhouse growers consider necessary for producing lettuce, herbs, spinach, and other greens. If you’re hankering for leafy greens, read on to see our choice for lettuce farmers below.

The Sun Blaze is a good runner-up if our main pick is unavailable. It’s essentially the same light, but there’s less information on its long-term performance.

The Sun Blaze F24T5-HO Fluorescent Grow Light Fixture is more or less an exact replica of the Hydrofarm Commercial T5, but there’s slightly less information available about its long-term performance. If our pick is sold out, or if you can get the Sun Blaze for cheaper, it’s a good bet.

The competition

The lamps higher than 200 watts were obviously overkill. Some Tfluorescent fixtures are a little different from our main picks, but they aren’t any better. The 2-foot Flora Hydroponics Fluorescent Grow Light System has the same features as the Lights of America Tfixture, but comes with bulbs that have a light temperature of 5000 K, not 41000 K like Lights of America, which means that light will look slightly bluer. If that matters to you, go ahead and spend a bit more on this light, but don’t expect your plants to notice the difference. If you still haven’t spent enough money on Tbulbs, you could choose to buy “full spectrum” T1grow bulbs, which will fit into the same fixture, such as the Agrosun T1or an Agrobrite 24-inch 20-watt T1bulb. I’m sure they’re charming, but they’ll only get you to a maximum DLI of if you leave a two-bulb fixture on for 2hours a day less than a foot away from little leaves. That’s enough light to raise ferns, African violets, and orchids, but seedlings of other species won’t live up to their full potential. If you have a little more to spend on bulbs and a fixture, you should just give up lattes for the week, save up, and buy the Hydrofarm Commercial T5 instead.

Grow lights exist to get photons to plants. Unfortunately, it’s extremely hard to tell if a grow light will do that from the information retailers list on their web sites. Listings commonly say something like “Lumen output rated up to 8000” or “6400 K bulb” or “280 Watts Super Bright Output.” None of these statements really tell you what to know: How many photons will get to your plants’ leaves.

As you may remember from high school physics, light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that acts as both a wave and a particle. Light comes in different wavelengths, and the wavelengths that humans can see (called the visible spectrum) roughly measure between 400 and 700 nanometers. Make the wavelengths shorter—say, 350 nanometers—and you’ll get ultraviolet radiation, which humans can’t see, but is visible to bees, birds, fish, some amphibians, reptiles, and cats. Make the wavelengths slightly longer (700 nm-mm) and you’ll get infrared radiation. Some snakes, insects, and bats seem to be able to perceive infrared radiation, but not with their eyes—they have special heat-sensing organs.

There are two types of Fluorescents: CFL and Tgrow lights. Fluorescent grow lights are inexpensive, provide a good light spectrum, fit well into small spaces and can be used in a standard lighting socket, give-off a pleasant color for indoor environments, don’t use a lot of electricity. and work well for small and well-trained plants (like herbs, clones, and seedlings). The downside is they have a smaller yield per watt vs. HID and LED so they need to be positioned very close to the plant. As such, they are not recommended for taller plants like tomatoes or cannabis. Fluorescents also contain a small amount of mercury, which may turn off some to this type of lighting choice. CFL lights are usually twisted in their shape, while Tgrow lights are long and narrow.

Figure out the light cycles

A specificity of indoor plant growing with grow lights is that you need to figure out what the light cycle for the plants will be, as there won’t be sun that dictates when plants get the light. Light cycles are used to simulate the conditions of day and night for indoor gardens and you need to know your light cycles to grow your succulents faster. A general rule of thumb for growing any plants under lights is that the more light you give them, the faster they will grow and the same can be attributed to succulents. If you are overwintering the plants, then I would put the succulents at first on 20/light cycle meaning that I would leave the lights on for 20 hours a day and then turn them off for hours and slowly increase the darkness period so the light cycle is 16/(light/dark). Succulents need to know when it is winter, so they can start their dormant process. If you use grow lights all year around for your succulents, during the summer you can have them on 24/0 or 20/light cycle for them to grow quickly and thrive.

Fluorescent plant grow lights are one of the most popular options for the home gardener or hobbyist. They’re available in at least options: Standard T1fluorescents, High Output (HO) Tfluorescents, and compact fluorescents (CFL).

The newest lamps among plant grow light technology, LEDs are developing a reputation for economy and efficiency. They consume less power and produce less heat than other lamp types.

Grow Lights

For indoor gardening, lighting is paramount. Without adequate light, plants become leggy (i.e., tall, thin and weak)—if they grow at all. I’ve found that even when grown next to a sunny south-facing window, most plants tend to struggle. For best results, you should supplement natural light with grow lights. If you don’t, you’re probably going to be disappointed.

There are several types of grow lights to choose from, ranging in both cost and effectiveness. As you read about the pros and cons of each below, keep in mind that there is more to a grow light than just the bulb. Unless you purchase a complete kit, you’ll need to also find compatible reflectors, cords, ballasts and other parts.

A quick note about light color: The whiteness of a light’s output is measured in Kelvin units (K). The higher the degree of Kelvin, the “cooler” (bluer) it appears, and the lower, the “warmer” (redder) it appears. Blue light encourages compact, bushy vegetative growth. Red light initiates the flowering stage. Lights between 4,000 and 6,000K are known as “full-spectrum” lights because they produce both cool and warm light colors, much like natural sunlight.

Incandescent

Not much about the incandescent light bulb has changed since Thomas Edison invented it in 187While inexpensive and readily available, incandescent lights are the least efficient option for indoor gardening. They’ll increase your utility bill, produce more heat than light, and burn out more quickly than other options. I wouldn’t recommend using these to grow plants.

Fluorescent

A common—and perhaps the most popular—choice for home gardeners, fluorescent lights use ¼ the energy, last about 10x longer, and produce more light compared to incandescent lights (energy.gov). They’re great for starting seeds and growing greens, herbs and other plants with low to medium light requirements.

The primary drawback with fluorescent lights is they don’t produce enough light to effectively grow fruit-bearing plants, such as squash and tomatoes.

Timer

It’s important to facilitate air circulation around your plants, and running a small fan is an easy way to do this. Keeping the air moving will help prevent problems, such as leaf fungi and garden pests.

Rubber-backed Rug

Place your indoor Tower Garden on a rubber-backed rug or mat to protect your floor from any accidental spills that may occur when refilling the water reservoir or performing other maintenance tasks. Like the timer, this is not necessarily required, but useful.

Pump Timer Setting

When growing outside, you should set your pump timer to 1minutes on and 1minutes off. But in a cooler, climate-controlled environment, plant roots don’t dry out as quickly as they do outside. Changing your timer to 1minutes on and 4minutes off when growing indoors is a way of both saving a little energy and preventing over-watering.
