waterproof cell phone case Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy waterproof cell phone case, right? No!

Mophie juice pack H2PRO for iPhone and 6s

Mophie is famed for its excellent quality battery cases for iPhones. Generally considered the gold-standard in power accessories, the company has expanded its juice pack range to the iPhone and 6s, even producing this waterproof version.

Your encased iPhone will survive water immersion up to 1.2m for 30 minutes. It’s a tad pricey, but if you’re after extra power and full on waterproofing, it’s definitely worth considering.

I was the accessories editor at iLounge for a little over three years. During my tenure, I reviewed more than 1,000 products, most of which were cases. This number spans multiple generations of Apple products, from the iPhone to the iPad Air and everything in between. I’ve probably handled more iPhone cases than almost anyone on the planet, giving me a particularly experienced perspective and depth of knowledge when it comes to the category.

Brent Rose, who conducted our tests for waterproofness, was the lead action cam reviewer for Gizmodo and has written about action cams for WIRED, Outside Magazine, Fast Company, and the Wirecutter. As part of his testing, he regularly takes cameras out of the lab and uses them in the ways in which they were intended: while surfing, mountain biking, snowboarding, kayaking, and more. So he knows what makes a rugged waterproof device.

Pull Quote

Freak accidents can happen, and a phone can end up busted even if it’s in a case, but we think it’s overkill to spend money on…a waterproof case simply out of fear of those rare occasions.

Where a waterproof case is useful is for people who are particularly active, and especially those who spend a lot of time around water or in dusty environments, or who have the propensity to drop their handsets. Spend every day at the beach, on a boat, or skiing? Work in construction? Regularly hand your phone over to a drooly baby, or put it in the hands of an active toddler? Then this sort of case and its extra protection might be the right choice for you.

It’s important to remember, however, that none of these products’ warranties cover your iPhone itself. And, again, freak accidents can happen. You shouldn’t abuse your phone just because you have it in a more-protective case—it’s not worth risking damage to your iPhone if you can help it. And we don’t think these cases should be used directly in water for anything more than light swims—a GoPro or waterproof camera are safer ways to take lots of photos in the water.

Universal bracket

These are similar to the above mounts, but they don’t rely on a dedicated case to put your phone into. Instead, they use a universal mount that attaches to your handlebars or stem, and will grip practically any phone even if it’s already in a protective case.

The obvious advantage is that you don’t need to buy a new mount when you change phones (and you can lend it to people), but therein lies its disadvantage, too: we reckon they’re a lot less secure.

Popular examples include the Olixar universal phone mount (pictured above), which has an adjustable plastic bracket, the RAM X-Grip, and the BikeCityGuide Finn, which uses rubber bands to keep your phone in place.

Frame bag

If you’d rather keep the real estate on your bars clear, then carrying your phone in a frame bag is the alternative. A phone frame bag sits on your top tube, just behind the head tube. As well as providing some storage space, this will also have a transparent sleeve for your phone to slide into.

The key consideration, however, is whether the transparent window provides sufficient protection from the elements while also allowing you to operate the phone’s touchscreen.

The major downside of this option is that you have to look/reach down further than you would if your phone were mounted on your bars. So if you can’t hear the audio alerts, the frame-bag option may be more suitable for riders who are willing to stop when they want to use their phones.

Popular examples include the Lezyne Smart Energy Caddy, the Birzman Zyklop Navigator II, both of which are touchscreen-compatible and have space to stash an inner tube, multitool and more.

Quad Lock

This Aussie-designed bicycle phone mount is described as “One case, multiple mounts” – it’s a classy product with a price to match. Once you’ve fitted your phone into its model-specific plastic case (36g), you can then mount it in a number of ways, including with an out-front mount (42g) which we were sent, or a regular stem mount.

The solid plastic case is reminiscent of the iPhone leather case, but it’s a little chunkier, especially in the middle to accommodate the quarter-turn socket that it mates with. The case fits the iPhone buttons located along edge very well, and is classy looking when used on its own. A neoprene-like material is used on the inside to protect the back of your phone.

There’s a blue tab that you press to rotate the case and remove it, though we noticed that it can still be twisted off with a little more force if the blue tab isn’t pushed. We guess this is done for security reasons, so that your phone doesn’t get too badly damaged in a crash.

Olixar Universal Bike Mount

This is by far the cheapest bicycle phone market on our list, and also the heaviest at 116g. So what’s good about it? Well it fits pretty much any smartphone, thanks to adjusting side arms on a ratchet that can encompass any phone from 70-110mm wide (that’s phablet territory). There’s a nice rubber finish to the arms, to protect your phone and keep it securely in place.

There’s also a fold-down shelf on the bottom of the mount to support your phone, meaning it’s supported on three sides, with a rubber pad on the back to protect your phone.

The detachable handlebar mount can accommodate a very large range of bars – from diameter 18mm up to 32mm – using a hinged clamp closed by a long screw and plastic nut that’s very effective, but feels cheaply made, with sharp edges, and it’s quite large, too.

The Olixar feels less secure than the other bike phone mounts on this list: the case attaches to the bar mount through a slide-and-lock system with four anchors and a positive-sounding ‘click’, but we probably wouldn’t take it mountain biking.

Although bigger screens are in vogue, you’ll still find a wide variety of display sizes. And size is only part of the story, as narrower aspect ratios are making big-screen phones easier to use with one hand.

Small Screen (Inches or Smaller) are compact and powerful.

Google Pixel XL

If possible, test the phone you plan to buy to make sure it captures images quickly enough; some midrange and lower-end phones suffer from lag. And if you plan to shoot a ton of photos and video, look for a handset with a microSD card slot.

A good processor inside a phone should translate to faster open times for apps, smoother gameplay and quicker photo editing, but you don’t have to pay attention to cores or clock speed. It’s better to look at the performance results in our reviews, such as Geekbench, which measures overall performance, as well as real-world tests we run.

The Apple iPhone X features the powerful A1Bionic processor.

Right now the fastest mobile chip (by far) is Apple’s A1Bionic processor, which is inside the iPhone X, iPhone and iPhone Plus. For example, the A1took only 4seconds to edit a 4K video, compared with nearly minutes for the Pixel and more than minutes for the Galaxy S8+.

Internal Storage

Given that some games can easily take up more than 1GB of storage — not to mention how many high-res photos and videos smartphone owners are capturing — we highly recommend opting for as much internal storage as possible.

A microSD card can help expand your storage. It’s available on many Android phones, but Apple’s phones don’t offer this option.

Battery Life

We consider any phone that lasts longer than hours of straight 4G LTE surfing to be very good.

Fast Charging

If you want to be able to juice your phone up in a hurry, check to see whether your phone offers fast wireless charging. For instance, Google says the Pixel will give you hours of power in just 1minutes. If you’re shopping for an Android phone, you might check that it supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 (or an earlier version of the standard).

Removable Battery

Removable batteries have fallen out of favor with most smartphone-makers, especially with more users demanding water resistance. But there are some benefits to this kind of design. Once your existing battery stops holding a charge for as long as it did when it was fresh, you can just swap in a new one without having to pay for a replacement service or a new phone.

ZTE Blade V8

The disadvantages of going with a smaller prepaid carrier include a more limited selection of smartphones (in most cases) and paying full price for the handset. While MetroPCS, Boost and Virgin matched the performance of their parent networks in our testing — Boost and Virgin are Sprint subsidiaries — Cricket’s 4G speeds are notably slower than parent company AT&T’s. And carriers reserve the right to deprioritize prepaid traffic if there’s a lot of congestion on their network.

First Impressions of the JOTO Dry Bag

The clasping mechanisms at the top of the case are also plastic and are rather loose when opening, with lots of play. Seams on the case were nice and tight, with no areas that looked like they might leak. The neck lanyard was a smooth comfortable cloth that feels comfortable to wear, even in warm climates like the beach.

Testing in the Real World

We recently took a cruise to Mexico, where we were able to try the case out in real-world conditions. Specifically, we took the case into the water with us while we snorkeled. We trusted the case enough to put our actual phone in the case to see how it worked.

We first placed the case with phone in the sand at the shoreline, letting a mix of sand and water wash over it. We found no leaks and no sand got into the case. We then took the phone into the water while we snorkeled around for a few minutes. During this time there were no leaks either. Pulling the phone out of the water, it worked perfectly.

Even after sitting in the sand and under the water, the phone was dry and worked perfectly.

Where the phone fell short was using the touchscreen underwater.

JOTO dry bag

Outside of the water, we were able to use the phone just as we normally would. We were also surprised by the photo quality. Compare the two photos below. The one of the left was taken without the cover on. The image on the right was taken with the cover on.

The difference in photos with and without the case is small.

As you can see, there is no discernible difference in the photo quality, which actually surprised us.

Spigen Tough Armor

Spigen makes some of the toughest cases for the Samsung Galaxy series, with a focus on protecting the phone from drops. Watch out for their different model names for varying levels of protection, though. In general, look for anything better than the “Rugged Armor” series. For example, the Tough Armor case.

The Tough Armor for the Galaxy Sor the Neo Hybrid for the Galaxy Sare what you will notice first. Like the Otterbox Defender, these are multi-layer cases with extra protection at the corners. Your phone is most likely to drop on a corner, which also cracks the screen, so that’s what the Spigen cases protect best.

Spigen’s cases also raise the back of the phone slightly around the camera. This way, your camera’s lens is in no danger of getting scratches.

Unless you are an avid photographer, you’ll hardly miss the added features of a proper camera. Too bad your tripod isn’t compatible with your smartphone. Or is it? Maybe one day smartphones will come with…

Ghostek Atomic Series

There are a number of people on Android-based forums who are quite fond of Ghostek’s Atomic series. If you haven’t heard of it before, don’t blame yourself, it’s relatively new. But given the number of happy customers it has, it might be worth it.

The latest is the Atomic 3.0 series for the Galaxy Sand S8+, while earlier models of the Galaxy franchise use Atomic or Atomic 2.0 cases. All the cases fully seal the phone, including a screen cover to protect it from scratches.

Accidentally broke the screen on your new Galaxy S8? Don’t worry, there are options for repairing it.

Urban Armor Gear Metropolis

If you want a rugged case with a folio cover, the Urban Armor Gear (UAG) Metropolis is your best bet. UAG is renowned for its toughness, and the addition of a flip-open cover only adds to it.

Looking for a tempered glass screen protector? Here are six tips for buying a tempered glass screen protector.

Tough vs. Slim

Looking for a tough case to protect your phone means giving up on the sleek and thin handset you love. You’ll now be left with an oversized beast — but it won’t break.

Tripod strap and a lot of extra pockets

Meiwo waterproof camera bag is compatible with any DSLR camera including popular brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Samsung, Fuji etc. It has a high definition triple waterproof safe system that can provider 100% waterproof protection upto 20 meters of depth. Not only waterproof, this case can also protect your camera from dust, mud, sand, snow or any other external items. Made of soft PVC material, it allows you to easily access all functions underwater.

Multipurpose bag

Yuhan camera bag is a strong, durable and nice looking bagpack with 11.x 17.x 7.inch dimension and 1.kg weight. Its interior is padded with removable and adjustable cushions. You can create different small rooms for all of your lenses and for your camera. This bag can also be used as normal bagpack by removing the padded interior. Tripod can be fitted to either side and has straps to hold it secure.

If an iPhone or Samsung aren’t your style, here are some other options that might work for you. We don’t consider any of them to be the best phone for most people, but depending on your needs, budget, or priorities, they could be a better choice for you.

Bad Stuff

As technology improves, perhaps it’s only fitting that we would want to take our most personal device with us on our dives. After all, we use our cell phones for everything these days. We can take photos and videos with them. We use them as a calculator and a place to write notes. We, of course, rely on them in emergency situations.

There are even diving apps that you can use to help with everything from reviewing course material, to organizing a dive trip, to calculating the dive plan, to logging your dives.

Clearly, cell phones can be a helpful tool in the diving world. But, can you really use them during a dive? With manufacturers now marketing waterproof and water resistant devices, it’s tempting to think about taking your cell phone with you on your dive.

One other option

If you imagined yourself shooting videos or snapping pics from your phone underwater, don’t give up on the idea so fast. Because, while the availability of waterproof and water resistant phones may be limited, there are plenty of cases that will get the job done.

Update 140112

One of our Lenmar battery cases stopped charging properly with an iPhone inserted. Lenmar customer support was wonderful: simply filled out an online form and sent the defective unit back and they mailed us a new one.

With it has come and gone many many many iPhone cases. From carrying the iPhone nekked to waterproof cases, here are a few of the best iPhone cases that have proven useful enough to find a place in my pocket and become worthy of recommendation.
